Help using Online Books

Menu shortcuts

Menu shortcuts are links to useful pages/areas that may be accessed often. The main shortcuts are located in the dark grey menu bar at the top of all pages in EITOnline.

  • My courses displays a dropdown list of all successful course enrolments undertaken in EITOnline (most students self-enrol in courses in EITOnline - it is not automatic)
  • All Courses shows an expandable list of course categories containing enrollable courses and sometimes sub categories
  • Student Help displays a dropdown list of all the available student help online books

The Social networks icons also provide navigation. The most important icon is the Globe icon. This will take you to the student portal/student landing page. This is your connection from EITOnline to the student portal page.

  • Google+ Student information feed which is also displayed on the MyEIT page
  • Facebook EIT's facebook page
  • MyEIT takes you to the student landing page (student portal)

Navigation Bar

The Navigation Bar or Breadcrumb trail displays your location as you move through the EIT Online pages. The easiest way to move around is to click on the links within the Navigation Bar. The Navigation Bar collapses but hovering over any of the sections will expand the text in the section as this next image shows. In these example images News forum posts are being viewed. By expanding and clicking on the section called News forum the user would be taken back to the front page of the News forum in the BCS Programme Information course.

When all the sections of the Navigation Bar are not collapsed it looks like the image below. This expanded view is the same location (path) in EITOnline as the image above but is used to explain all the different sections.

  1.  Dashboard wherever you are this link takes you back to the first page you see after you login.
  2.  Course name If you are working in a course clicking on the course name takes you back to the main page of the course you are currently working in
  3.  Activity name If you are working in an activity (such as a forum) clicking on the activity name takes you back to the initial activity page
  4.  Activity subpages activities can have several sub pages shown in the Navigation Bar/breadcrumb trail such as when you have clicked on an individual forum post or someone's reply post

Web browser navigation

You can open multiple EIT Online pages at once in your web browser. As an example, you can keep this page open and also open one or more of your course pages. To do this, right-click on a Navigation Bar link you want to open and choose from the available options;

  • Open Link in New Tab - this adds an extra tab to your browser
  • Open Link in New Window - this opens a second instance of your browser

Try these both and see if you find one or both of these useful.

You can also use the back arrow in your browser to go back to the last page you were on but always make sure you save or post any changes in the page you are on before navigating away.

Navigation block

Watch Video

The Navigation block is one of the most used blocks in EITOnline. The Navigation Block allows access to most areas in EITOnline and displays on every page of EITOnline. It contains an expanding tree menu which includes Dashboard, Site home, Site pages and My courses as four main headings. To use the Navigation block effectively there are two features you need to understand.

  • Expanding tree menu
  • Linked heading

These two features work in conjunction with each other. Use the Expanding tree menu to drill down to information you need or want, then click on the Linked heading to view its content.

The Expanding tree menu can be expanded and collapsed where a folder icon exists next to a heading name. Not all headings will have a folder icon next to them but the items that do can be expanded to show more options. If a folder is closed (see above) you can expand out the menu to see more options by clicking on the folder.

When an folder icon appears open the menu has been fully expanded to show all available menu options (although there maybe further indented menus that can also be expanded underneath the current item as shown above). Clicking on a folder icon that has been fully expanded (open) will collapse the menu once more. Hint: Train yourself to click on the folder icon rather than the heading name when expanding and collapsing the Navigation tree menu. The reason for this that some headings are also Linked headings that link to other pages so clicking on the heading name rather than the folder icon may take you to a page in EITOnline you didn't really want to view.

A Linked heading is where an item in the Expanding tree menu is linked (hyperlinked) to specific content or data in EITOnline. Clicking on a Linked heading will change your current view and display new content specific to the heading you just clicked on. For example the Dashboard heading is also a Linked heading. It is grey in colour and when you mouse hover over it the menu item name will change colour (typical behaviour of hyperlinks). Clicking on the My home heading name will display your My home content on screen.

Remember, click on the folder icons to drill down to where you want to go then click on linked heading name to view related content.

  • Docking blocks

Blocks are sections of EIT Online course pages that contain specific content. Some default blocks such as the Navigation block and Administration block will show throughout the site. Individual courses may have different block layouts with blocks visible on the right side of the page. In courses the course coordinator controls which blocks (other than the default blocks) are visible in their course.

Hiding blocks

How to hide and show blocks
You can control the appearance of blocks by using the Hide (collapse) and Show (expand) icons to change the way the blocks display on your screen. In the example below the Administration block is collapsed and then expanded.

You can undock blocks from the Vertical Dock area by using the Undockicon. How to hide and show blocks
Vertical Dock  Pop-up Menu
Use of the Vertical Dock can create more page space or offer a less cluttered layout. Customising the page by docking blocks is an individual preference. Changes made are only visible to the individual making the changes. Docked blocks will remain in Tab format even after you log out and log back in again so be aware of what blocks are sitting in the Vertical Dock area. Each Tab in the Vertical Dock area has a Pop-up menu so you can access block content. In order to view the content all you have to do is hover the mouse over it and the block menu/content will be displayed in a Pop-up menu for as long as your mouse remains hovered over the block name from within the Vertical Dock area.
